First Time Home Buyer Help - Choosing A Real Estate Agent
One of the first things that is necessary in buying a home, is selecting a real estate agent. So, when it comes
to first time home buyer help, the most commonly asked question is what do you look for in a potential agent?
You may know a lot of friends or co-workers who will give you a name of a realtor that will help you find the
perfect new home, but that may not always be the best way to go. You'll still want to ask specific questions
because ultimately, you want to be represented by someone who will be serve you and your interests. So...what
should you ask potential realtors?
How Much Experience Do They Have?
Finding a realtor with experience, especially with first time home buyers, is critical. I would say that you
want someone with at least 2-3 years of experience. It takes time to learn the home buying business and you want
someone who knows the ins and outs well. One who has a vast array of experience. Pick the wrong agent and you could
be looking at many 'surprises' down the line.
Is The Realtor Full-Time?
This may not seem like it means much, but it does. Ask yourself this; would I be better served with a full time
realtor who makes this his business and passion...or would it be better to go with someone who does this part time
or recreationally? The real estate industry has a lot of part time people who supplement a retirement income or do
it in addition to working a full time job in another line of work. I would suggest your best bet is to go with a
realtor who is full time and fully committed to the home buying and selling industry.
Ask Questions
Another big area is in asking questions. Many people fail to ask any questions because they just assume the
agent knows everything and they don't. This is a huge mistake. You want to ask any question that comes to mind. A
good agent will welcome your questions.
In fact, before going with any agent, you should conduct a mini interview so to speak. Gather up facts on the
real estate company they work for. Do they advertise online, in the newspapers, etc.? How big is the firm?
Then...meet them personally and get a feel of whether or not you can work with this particular realtor. Are you on
the same page?
The best advice is to talk with at least 3 other realtors before making a final decision. Ask questions, explain
your goals and situation, and gauge which particular realtor will best help you meet them. Buying a house is a huge
investment. You need the right help that only a good realtor can provide.
